Do You Reimburse Employees For Return-To-Worksite Expenses? You Make The Call

A new survey suggests employers are considering paying, or at least sharing, the costs of employees returning to the office.

More than half of employees surveyed want their employers to cover expenses related to parking, uniforms, and toll roads. Sixty percent of employees surveyed said inflation has made the cost of going back to work in the office rise. Six in ten employees surveyed said they would ask for a raise if their employers would make them spend their own income to come to work.

More than half (59 percent) said they would look for a new job.

Four potential solutions for employers to both implement office return and mitigate related expenses include:
 

  • Covering costs through employee stipends
  • Reducing costs through flexible policies, such as a more casual dress code or flexible hours.
  • Helping employees budget through financial wellness programs or offering financial wellness benefits.
  • Offsetting costs by reducing compensation for hybrid and remote workers.

Undoubtedly, there is push-back to return to work. One way to ease that push-back is to offer a bonus to employees who agree to come back to work in the office full-time. The "carrot" approach has a lot of appeal.
